Hello Readers:
My name is Brittany Melin and I am interning with Deanna Mims at MarketDone this semester. I am interning because I am a Public Relations major and it is required of me. But I also want the experience and to know if this is the profession for me. I was unsure for a time and actually thought I hated PR and was thinking seriously about changing majors. When I interviewed with Deanna I think she picked up on those feelings somewhat and we both agreed that after this internship I would know for sure how I felt about PR; and I must say that so far I love working for her. I’m learning so much and meeting so many great people.
Shockingly, working is so different than taking classes. I’m glad I finished all my PR classes before getting an internship so I could see clearly the distinction between the two and realize that I don’t hate the profession at all. I’m a senior at Florida State University and happily set myself up to have a really good senior year. I’m done with my major except for my internship, because I was accepted into the program a year early. I love college and am really sad about graduating. I joke often that now it’s time to change majors just so I can stay longer.
I chose to major in PR my sophomore year of high school because a personality test told me it was a match. Then after talking to my advisor and doing some research I found that public relations would provide a nice background since I want to work with non-profits, mainly those for animals and children, though my dream is to go to Africa. My senior year of high school I still wasn’t completely sure what I wanted to major in so I looked into joining the Peace Corps. However, you have to have an associate’s degree first so I came on to college. Maybe I’ll join after I graduate, I haven’t decided on my future yet. I do know I want to stay in Tallahassee for a while.
The main thing I’m hoping to get out of this internship is to know if I can do this, if this is the profession for me, if I’ll be happy working in PR and I think I’m finding all these things to be true. I think that once I learn the networking and other necessary skills I will be able to accomplish my goals of helping people, changing policy, and improving lives, with the above stated focus on children, animals, and Africa.
My first month’s analysis of my internship would be that I love it. I love working with Deanna. She is fun, helpful, and understanding. I love everything that I’m working on and learning. I like that I am getting a chance to work on the first Dandi Awards event, an event I’m sure will be a huge success. Most of all, I love meeting so many different wonderful and influential people. I think I will get a lot out of this experience and I’m happy to be interning for MarketDone.
